Asphalt vs. Concrete Driveways: Which Is Better in NJ?
For most northern New Jersey homeowners, asphalt wins on cost, winter performance and repairability. Concrete wins on lifespan and appearance options. Here is the honest comparison.
Cost
Asphalt typically runs roughly half the installed cost of concrete for the same area. Repairs are also dramatically cheaper: a concrete slab crack is largely permanent, while asphalt can be patched, overlaid or sealed.
Winter behavior
Asphalt flexes with frost heave and its dark surface sheds snow faster. Road salt does not attack asphalt the way it spalls concrete surfaces. In a climate with 30+ freeze-thaw cycles a year, that matters.
Maintenance
Asphalt needs sealcoating every few years. Concrete needs joint sealing and is prone to staining. Neither is maintenance-free.
