How to Choose an Asphalt Contractor in New Jersey

The paving trade attracts transient operators. A few checks separate real contractors from the trucks that show up unannounced with 'leftover' material.

Verify registration and insurance

Ask for the NJ Home Improvement Contractor registration number and a certificate of insurance naming general liability and workers' compensation.

Insist on a written scope

It should state compacted base depth, asphalt mix and compacted thickness, compaction equipment, drainage handling and disposal.

Look at owned equipment

Contractors who own pavers and rollers control their quality. Crews with only shovels and a dump truck are hand-laying, which cannot reach specification density.

Check local references

Ask for jobs in your town completed three or more years ago, and go look at them.
